Relocating to Utah: What You Need to Know
The cost of living in California and the Northeast Corridor keeps rising and there are no signs that it will be slowing down anytime soon. Luckily, the US is a big country and there are plenty of places with a lower cost of living. The trick is finding a place where the cost of living is low but you still have access to good schools, work and plenty of activities to fit your lifestyle.
Which is why so many people are opting for moving to Utah. It has all of those things and more so it is an ideal location if you are looking to move to someplace that offers high quality of life at a low cost of living then look no further.
There are things that you need to know before you pack your bags, however. In this article, we will give you plenty to think about so you can decide if Utah is really the place that you are looking for.
Housing market is stable
Since there are a lot of people making the move to Utah, it leads to an increase in home prices. Don’t be frightened by the increase as it is actually a good sign of things to come. Although you won’t be getting the deals that were available ten years ago, you will still get a lot more house for less money for what you would pay where you’re living now.
The reality is that Utah homes for sale are a great value and will continue to be for the next few years. There is a prediction that within two years the market growth will slow down but still be good for about a 5% increase year to year. This is good news for buyers as it means that they will get some quick equity after buying that can be used to do some renovations if necessary.
It also means that buying as an investment is a good idea as the rental market is looking to heat up. It will be easy to find tenants and keep them or, you can always rent it out on Airbnb if you live in a very touristy area.
Steady job market
If you are not moving to Utah because you are being transferred by your job then you will be looking for a job when you get there. Luckily, Salt Lake City (SLC) is the fourth hottest place to find a job in the country.
And that also extends to the rest of the state. It is a great place to be looking for work right now as the unemployment rate is well below the national average. One of the reasons is the diversity of the industries there. No matter what sector you are working in, there is likely a job for you when you get there.
Construction is very hot right now as houses are going up quickly and the infrastructure to support growing communities needs to be built. This spills over into construction for municipal buildings, hospitals and schools. Healthcare workers are always in demand as are computer programmers and engineers. Since Silicon Valley is so expensive, many software houses have relocated to nearby Utah.
Good schools
Utah ranks very high when it comes to the quality of education as well as access to its children. Truth be told, there is some room for improvement but seeing as how the population is growing, schools are seeing a massive amount of investment and making improvements all the time.
In fact, Utah has two high schools that top the list of best high schools in the US out of 500. Students are ranked very high in college readiness rankings plus a high graduation rate.
Higher education is also very good with Brigham Young University leading the pack.
Great weather
In some areas of the country, there are no longer four seasons. In the Northeast, winter bleeds right into summer with almost nonexistent spring and autumn. In other areas, winter never really comes.
In Utah, you get all four seasons. The climate is varied across the state as it has a lot of different terrain from the deserts in the South to the mountains in the North. The entire state is well above sea level and has earned it the nickname of the Elevated state. This means that you will see some snow in many areas of the state in the winter, but it doesn’t really last long as the days see a lot of sunshine. The winters are not harsh unless you live in the remote mountain areas.
Summers can get quite hot and last much longer than in some other areas of the country but are usually dry.
Lots of outdoors activities
Utah is a nature lover’s paradise with a glut of national parks and a lot of wide open spaces. If you are an adventure sports type then there is every activity that you can imagine right at your doorstep.
In the winter you have Park City for skiing that brings in people from all over the world for the world class slopes and apres ski events. Hiking is just about everywhere you look as the terrain has a lot of hill country, mountains and plenty of forests in between.
Even extreme sports like paragliding are well represented in Utah so there is no shortage of ways to get an adrenaline rush.
A travel hub
Even though there is no shortage of things to do in Utah, you will want to get out of state at some point for vacation or work. Luckily, SLC is Delta’s hub for the western half of the US. You can get just about everywhere from there without too many connecting flights.
You can get on several direct flights to parts of Europe like Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. Those then can provide a jumping off point for points further afield. If sunny Mexico is your thing in the winter, then you have a number of destinations available without connections.
