How To Make a ‘Vegan’ Living Room
Most of us realise the importance of veganism and looking after our planet, but not so many of us are willing to take the jump and commit to the lifestyle.
Luckily, there are ways that you can contribute to the values of veganism without having to change your entire diet. One of the best ways to do this is by getting involved with some DIY and making your home vegan.
Why not start with the living room? It’s the centre of the house, and with just a few simple switches you could be the proud owner of a room that is completely ethical!
If you want to know more about how to do your bit and take care of the world we live in, then keep reading for all the information you could need on making your living room vegan.
Why is it important to go vegan?
More and more people today are taking the plunge and switching to veganism. Not only is it kinder to animals, but it does amazing things for the environment.
A lot of people struggle with the idea of cutting out animal products and by-products entirely, which is completely fine. The truth is, doing something small is a million times better than doing nothing at all.
An easy switch that you could make which you may not even realise is shifting to vegan and sustainable interior design. Okay, maybe you can’t give up your steaks yet, but you can make sure you’re not purchasing any leather or unethically-sourced furniture!
If all of us made a few simple changes to our lifestyle in this way, then we could seriously help save the lives of countless innocent animals, as well as do our bit to prevent the catastrophic impacts of climate change.
What makes a living room ‘vegan’?
The idea of an object like a living room being vegan may sound ridiculous, because we so often associate the term with food and drink products. However, most of the items that we use in our day to day life can be classed as either vegan or non-vegan.
For example, the materials that your clothes are made of, or the testing that was done to make your toiletries safe-to-use; all these things can either be vegan and sustainably sourced or non-vegan and therefore not sustainable.
Furniture
The first thing you can do in your mission to turn your living room vegan is make sure that all of your furniture has not been created at the expense of animals. Materials like leather, silk, and fur are all non-vegan, and can be substituted for vegan fabrics which are just as beautiful and high-quality.
There are a whole range of vegan fabrics out there such as acrylic or microfibre, as well as vegan versions of fur, leather, suede, and any other material you could ever want! There really is no reason to be using animal by-products for furniture anymore.
To ensure that your furniture is vegan, try and shop from independent businesses such as The Hair Pin Leg Company, who use recycled materials and are transparent about where their products come from. By switching to brands that are accountable for their actions, you will be able to be certain that your choices are ethical and vegan.
Sustainability
Part of embracing the vegan lifestyle means caring more about sustainability. Rather than purchasing furniture and other home decor every few months from commercial companies who mass produce products, try and shop local or find a business who source everything ethically.
By doing this, you are not only supporting an independent business, but you are ensuring the safety of innocent animals and helping to reverse the damage done to the planet through climate change.
Shopping vegan and sustainably means you will ultimately end up spending less and less often, which in turn means you will be producing less waste to end up in landfill and will be saving yourself a lot of money. It is far better to have a living room decorated with stylish and lifelong sustainable interior pieces, rather than non-vegan, unethical items that will need replacing every year.
